The objective of this project was to learn how to develop a character though video. By creating a 2-3-minute narrated video, we were required to introduce a central character (or someone in our life). This project was a collaboration with Lorenzo (aka Masta Pharaoh, the subject). The medium used was intended to unfold the multi-dimensionality of the persona as the video progressed—answering questions like, what is their life like and how can the audience identify with this character.

Masta Pharaoh is a twenty-something with a grungy, Afro-Punk vibe. His rebel mane matches his rebel aesthetic, speaking the truth through his lyrics and rhyming with passion. He works to be free from the shackles of the system and the sterotypes of society by pushing himself to tbe the best at what he does. Masta meaning ‘masterful’ and pharaoh meaning ‘that which you will become,’ this master has something to show the world – something that is guaranteed to inspire.

About the Subject

  • Masta Pharaoh

  • How his personal life affects his outlook on life, why certain songs are made, what feedback he hopes to get back from certain songs, the nature of his thoughts, the deeper core of who he is.

  • If I were a member of the audience, I would like to know about the duality of performer / musician / rapper and how he lives his day-to-day, and how the two affect each other.

  • Things needed to discover are about my subject is the way he sees the world and how he functions within it. This can include his ideology, meaning what he personally believes in, what drives him, or what he’s passionate about.

  • Yes, my subject is challenging the norm by persuing an alternate route to success. People tell us that you will struggle without going to college and developing a career. However, he has decided to pursue music.

  • One struggle he has had in the past is struggling to fitting in and standing out. He often has his “head in the clouds” meaning he focuses on his own thoughts, rather than what’s occuring around him. There is room for progress because he tries to learn how standing out can be an advantage. Something that he works to overcome is to sucessfully navigate through his environment without becoming a product of it.

  • My subject is likable and relatable because he sees himself as somewhat pure, and makes himself vulnerable, thus authentic.

  • He is bold yet humble, and stands for what he belives in.

  • Ways in which the subject tells their story and expresses their beliefs. Show / studio footage of the subject expressing their art through music. Their influence (activists, movie / music celebrities, etc.) World Events (news footage, articles, etc.)

Pharaoh and I developed a mood board based on the look and feel we were going for. The images are warm, inviting, and have a strong sense of color. GxAce. “Fuji X-T3 Long Term Review.
